AfterMatters ("we," "our," or "us") is a mobile and web application designed to help individuals manage end-of-life affairs after a loved one passes away. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal information when you use our Service.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

Account Information

• Email address
• Password (stored as a secure hash, never in plain text)

Checklist Personalization Answers

During onboarding, we ask optional questions to personalize your checklist. Answers may include:

• State where the death occurred
• Your relationship to the deceased
• General circumstances (such as whether the deceased was a veteran, a homeowner, or a business owner, or whether a will or trust exists)

These answers are used only to show or hide relevant checklist tasks. They are never sold or shared for marketing purposes.

Usage Data

• Task completion progress
• Notes you add to tasks
• Your preferences (view settings, section states)

Device Information

• Login email stored locally for convenience
• Session cookies for authentication

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Provide and maintain the AfterMatters service
• Track your progress through the checklist
• Save your notes and preferences
• Provide AI-powered task assistance (see Third-Party Services)
• Send password reset emails when requested
• Improve and develop new features

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your information for marketing purposes.

3. Third-Party Services

AfterMatters uses the following third-party services:

Supabase

Our database and authentication provider. Your account data, task progress, and notes are stored on Supabase servers located in the United States.

Stripe

We use Stripe to process one-time payments and refunds. When you complete a purchase or request a refund, your payment information is handled directly by Stripe. AfterMatters does not store your credit card details. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.

Ask AI (OpenRouter)

When you use the Ask AI feature, the task title, task description, your typed question, and prior conversation messages are sent to a third-party AI service to generate helpful responses. Your personal notes and checklist answers are not sent to the AI service. AI service providers process requests in accordance with their own data policies. Do not submit Social Security numbers, account numbers, passwords, medical records, financial statements, legal documents, or other sensitive or confidential information through the Ask AI assistant.

Services Directory (Google Places)

When you search for local service providers in the Services Directory, your search term and ZIP code are sent to Google Places API to return nearby results. No account information or personal data is included in this request. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

Rybbit Analytics

We use Rybbit Analytics to understand how AfterMatters is used, monitor performance, and improve the experience. Rybbit is active on both the public marketing pages and within the authenticated application. Rybbit collects information including pages visited, referral source, browser type and version, operating system, device type, screen size, browser language, and approximate location (country, state, and city) derived from your IP address. Your IP address is used to derive an anonymized identifier and is not stored directly. For authenticated users, AfterMatters passes your email address and account identifier to Rybbit to associate usage data with your account. Your checklist progress, personal notes, task answers, Ask AI conversations, and information about the deceased are never sent to Rybbit. Rybbit may use cookies or similar technologies in accordance with its own privacy policy, available at rybbit.io.

Vercel

Our web application is hosted on Vercel. Standard web server logs may be collected.

4. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:

• Row Level Security (RLS) ensures you can only access your own data
• Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text
• All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted)
• API keys are stored securely and never exposed to clients

While we strive to protect your information, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. When you delete your account:

• All your data is permanently deleted
• This includes task progress, notes, and preferences
• Deletion is irreversible

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

• Access: Request a copy of your personal data
• Correction: Update inaccurate information
• Deletion: Request deletion of your account and data

7. Cookies and Local Storage

AfterMatters uses:

• Authentication cookies to keep you signed in
• Local storage to remember your email for convenience
• Session storage for temporary preferences

We do not use advertising cookies or share cookie data with advertisers. Third-party services such as Rybbit Analytics may set their own cookies or use similar technologies in accordance with their own privacy policies.

8. Children's Privacy

AfterMatters is not intended for users under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

9. International Transfers

Your information is processed and stored in the United States. By using AfterMatters, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
